Published in 2021, The Legacy by Elle Kennedy is the fifth book in the Off-Campus series and acts as one giant epilogue for all our favorite Briar U hockey boys. The Legacy was released five years after The Goal, and after Kennedy wrote and released all of the Briar U series, the spin-off set in the same world as Off-Campus. So what happens to Garrett, Logan, Dean, and Tucker after they graduate from Briar University? Well… There’s an elopement. A proposal. A wedding. And a surprise pregnancy. So without further ado, let’s dive into the finale of Off-Campus!

CONTENT WARNING

I personally would rate this book as PG-16, if not higher, due to the frequency, detail, and overall language used throughout the book. In terms of spice, there are multiple open-door scenes, as well as several mentions of explicit details scattered throughout the book. As such, this review and recap will mention those details as it pertains to the plot and the story. If you would like to read the book and skip certain chapters and/or passages, I’ve noted the chapters and pages to the side. Non-SPoiler REview

The Legacy (Off-Campus, #5)The Legacy by Elle Kennedy
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I honestly don’t have too much to say regarding this one. The book is essentially four novellas bound in one book, where each novella focuses on a main couple from the first four Off Campus. Essentially, if you are a fan of epilogues, you will enjoy this book. I found it a little harder to get invested, simply because the plots were not as long or complex, but that was because the style of this book contrasted with the rest of the series. All in all, a worthwhile ending to a worthwhile series. It’s like catching up with your friends over coffee while they tell you what you’ve missed.

Side note: Can we talk about how the most unrealistic thing about this book is that everyone responds in these group chats right away? Every time someone texts a group chat, they get a response within about 3 seconds. Like, bruh. Never in my life. I guess the Best Buds Forever chat is superior.

While The Legacy has some minor mentions/spoilers for the Briar U series, none are mentioned in this review and recap. This section will, however, contain spoilers for the entire Off-Campus series, so do not read ahead if you don’t want spoilers. You have been warned.

The Pact

Our opening section plants us right back into the world of Grace and Logan (have I mentioned I LOVE THEM). Logan is spending Christmas with Grace and her dad. We learn that things have worked out really well for Logan. His dad made it through rehab and hasn’t touched a drink in years. His brother is back running the shop on his own terms. And Logan is living the life he dreamed of, playing for the pros and being with Grace rather than stuck at the garage.

As an early Christmas present, Grace receives a package from Garrett, and oh no, it’s the creepy doll, Alexander. Apparently, Dean bought this creepy antique doll (that comes with an information card about the dead kid who used to own it) for four grand for Tucker’s daughter, Jamie. Since everyone hates the doll, it has become a running bit where the friend group sends it to each other when they least expect it. Grace is anxious to get Alexander out of her possession, so she starts plotting who to ship him off to.

the mistake by elle kennedy

Now that Logan is playing pro hockey, he is on the go a lot. Logan and Grace don’t get to see each other as much as they would like, and they miss each other. Grace is in her last year of college, so her schedule is busy, and she is interested in pursuing a career as a television producer after her time working at the campus radio station. She confides in her old roommate, Daisy, about the distance she feels between her and Logan.

When we’re together, everything is as passionate and perfect as it was in the beginning. Our problem is trying to find time to be together. Time is scarce in our world.
– John Logan

While on the road with the Bruins, Logan texts Grace until she falls asleep because of the time difference. He is hit by how much he loves and misses her. So, Logan hits up his bestie and fellow teammate, Garrett Graham, and the bros go get a drink. Logan tells Garrett about his relationship struggles, and Garrett gives him some advice from when he and Hannah went through a similar transition period after Garrett entered the pros. Garrett tells Logan that they need to go on as many adventures as they can, to keep making memories and experiencing life together. So Logan starts pondering what to do.

Upon arriving back at his room, Logan walks in to a hockey groupie who broke into his room, desperately trying to hook up with him. Not wanting to deal with it, he calls security and goes to bunk with Garrett, who simply laughs, telling him he’s officially in the big leagues now. Turns out, grabbing a drink and Logan crashing on Garrett’s couch is enough for the media to start posting that Logan and Garrett have been secretly dating. How scandalous! The girls’ group chat, naturally, has a grand time making fun of it.

Logan gets home from a game, and he and Grace start discussing Tucker and Sabrina’s upcoming wedding, which leads them to talk about their own future. In their talk of getting married, they confirm that they would elope. Since Logan’s family dynamic is rough between his mom and his dad, and he doesn’t want to do something giant in one place with both of them, they decide that eloping makes the most sense for them. They even discuss eloping soon, but with both of their schedules being so chaotic, they can’t squeeze it in.

“Who says I want to marry you?” I tip my head in challenge.
“Don’t you dare pretend we’re not forever.”
– Elle Kennedy

Taking Garrett’s advice, Logan surprises Grace with a trip to a B&B in Vermont for a weekend ski trip over New Year’s Eve. On the car ride there, Logan is texting the OG hockey boys in their group chat, which is adeptly named ‘Best Buds Forever.’ As they drive, the weather worsens, and eventually, Grace and Logan find themselves stranded in the car on an abandoned road during a blizzard. The cell service is horrible, and when they eventually get a hold of someone, they learn that since it’s New Year’s Eve, a tow truck won’t be able to reach them for at least six hours. This leaves Grace and Logan to spend the night in the car.

Logan whips out some champagne he was going to save for the B&B, but they end up cuddling in the back seat of the car, sipping champagne from the bottle to ring in the new year. They keep turning the car heat on and off to conserve the car battery and end up exchanging childhood stories and simply enjoying being in each other’s presence.

However, Grace is close to her breaking point with the doom and gloom of the situation and proposes a pact to Logan. She tells him that if she dies in the snow and he is forced to eat her to survive, she will not judge him beyond the grave. Logan doesn’t like this idea at all and clarifying that they will die in each others arms together and that he could never eat her like a cave person.

“The offer to eat me after I die still stands,” I tell him. “That’s how much I love you.”
– Grace Ivers

Don’t worry, though, the tow truck arrives two hours late, but Grace and Logan eventually make it to their B&B. Upon their arrival, Logan proposes a new pact: they spend as much time together as they can. Nothing else matters if they aren’t in a good place, and if they feel distance in the relationship, they need to go on another adventure. This is a pact Grace is happy to get behind. The following morning, Grace and Logan stumble into the guy who owns the B&B, Pastor Steve, and Logan makes eyes at Grace and slyly asks if he does weddings…

The Proposal

Dean Heyward Di Laurentis has a big fat ring and is planning to propose to his girlfriend, Allie Hayes. In preparation, he is practicing his proposal in front of Garrett and Logan. However, he is doing a horrible job. All the boys are in town for Tucker and Sabrina’s wedding. They’ve been engaged for three years, but waited to get married till Sabrina finished law school at Harvard (which she did).

“Allie, you’re the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me,” I begin, keeping my gaze on Garrett.
“Ain’t that the truth,” Logan remarks.
– Elle Kennedy

Allie is wrapping up a TV show she has starred in for the past three years since she got out of college, and Dean is still coaching hockey and volleyball at a prep school in Manhattan. She flies out for the wedding and is so excited to reunite with her best friend, Hannah. Dean and Allie end up staying with Hannah and Garrett, and it feels just like old times, except everyone is all grown up now.

The guys and the gals go their separate ways for the respective bachelor and bachelorette parties. Allie heads to the tea party brunch bachelorette for Sabrina, which was inspired by Jamie’s current love of Alice in Wonderland. Jamie is growing like a weed and is bouncing around the table, talking to all her Aunties. At the brunch, Summer Di Laurentis (Dean’s younger sister) talks about how badly she wants to get married, and Allie admits that she has no interest in getting married in the near future.

The guys end up heading to the hockey arena (where the Bruins play) and surprise Tucker by bringing together the original college team to hit the ice. The boys are back. During all the bro bonding time, Dean and Tucker get a chance to discuss Dean’s proposal. Tucker makes it very clear that Dean is not allowed to propose at his wedding and ruin Sabrina’s night. Oh, how I’ve missed their brotherly fights.

the score by elle kennedy

It’s not that I don’t love Dean. Of course I do. And of course I envision us getting married and having a family one day. One day being the operative words.
– Allie Hayes

The wedding day finally arrives, and everyone is happy to celebrate Tucker and Sabrina. At the reception, all the hockey boys are yapping up a storm, and Dean hears Allie make a subtle side comment about not being ready for a wedding. Allie gets nervous that Dean is thinking about proposing, so she runs off to the bathroom to collect herself. On her bathroom adventure, she overhears Logan calling Grace Mrs. Logan, and then they both find Hannah throwing up, thinking she might be pregnant. Night of secrets for sure.

Dean continues with his efforts for the proposal. He asks for Allie’s dad’s blessing, and they even manage to have a nice little bro moment. Dean arranges for his penthouse to be available, telling his family the plan, and everyone gets excited. Allie is alarmed when she arrives to find that Dean went all out, even getting her favorite bread and dressing up extremely nicely. When Allie finally puts two and two together and sees him reaching for his pocket, she says, “Don’t.” Allie doesn’t even give him the chance to propose and tells him she is shocked he would do such a thing when he knows she’s not ready. To Allie, engagement, wedding, and kids are all part of a single package, and she is not ready for all of it, so she feels Dean is not being considerate of her feelings.

Dean knows that Allie is not ready for a wedding or for kids, but he doesn’t understand why she is against getting engaged when they already know they want to spend the rest of their lives together. Crushed from her rejection, Dean won’t talk to Allie the next day, so she goes out with her friends from work and tries to explain the situation. Her friend Sera spreads some much-needed light on the subject, taking Allie’s ‘relationship ladder’ analogy and telling her that all the rungs don’t have to be evenly spaced. With her friend explaining that their timeline doesn’t have to be fixed and that Allie isn’t the only one on the relationship ladder, she realizes the mistakes and assumptions she’s made.

I assumed he was proposing because he’s spontaneous and was simply jumping on the wedding bandwagon. But what if this is about Dean needing a stronger commitment, needing to know we’re moving forward together?

– Allie Hayes

Her mind made up, Allie knows what she has to do. If Dean needs the reassures that she is committed to their relationship, she’ll do it. And it’s not like they weren’t planning on getting married eventually anyway. So, she finds out the hotel Dean is at, hanging with Garrett and Logan, and rushes off to declare her love. Allie manages to sneak into the adjoining rooms and scares the crap out of Logan when he gets out of the shower. Awkward. Dean and Allie head off to speak privately, and Allie proposes. She explains her fear, but says she wants him and wants this relationship for the long haul. In her poetic speech, Allie tells him she loves him unconditionally and wants him to know she is there whenever he needs her.

This blinding ring on Allie’s finger is like a billboard announcing to everyone we know and everyone we’re gonna know, that this woman is mine. She owns my heart.

– Dean Di Laurentis

So, Allie finally gets the big fancy ring on her finger. Dean and Allie are officially engaged. As they are celebrating their exciting news, they receive a package in the mail. Turns out, Grace and Logan think they’re hilarious at sent Alexander as a congratulations present. And in their following conversation, Allie accidentally let it slip that Grace and Logan eloped.

The Honeymoon

The newlyweds, Tucker and Sabrina, are preparing to go on their honeymoon, aka their first real vacation since Jamie was born. With Sabrina focused on finishing Harvard Law, Tucker continuing his business at the bar, and both of them working to parent a three-year-old Jamie, they haven’t had time to connect recently. Sabrina is nervous since they are leaving Jamie behind, but Tucker’s mom is watching over Jamie, and Tucker is determined to help Sabrina relax. All this to say, they have a plan to spend the next ten days at Dean’s family beach house (which Dean has very generously offered to them).

On the plane, they discuss Sabrina’s job options moving forward now that she’s graduated. She has two different law firms looking to hire her, and she is stressed about taking a job that won’t allow her proper time to spend with her family. Yet, the honeymoon gets off to a rocky start, literally, when the plane has to make an emergency landing due to a mechanical problem. Naturally, Sabrina begins to stress because they don’t have a will, and what will happen to their beloved daughter if they die in a plane crash?

The rest of the travel to the beach, Sabrina goes full lawyer mode, peppering Tuck with questions as she works to formulate their will. Needless to say, it’s not a very romantic vibe. But eventually, they make it to the beach house, where they are promptly met by their ‘wedding present’ from Dean and Allie: Alexander. As Tucker is on the phone with Dean, Sabrina throws in a good yell and then drags Tuck with her as they go chuck Alexander into the ocean.

Hoping that their vacation will turn up, Tuck and Sabrina head out into the ocean for a swim. They mess around like any cute couple would before Tucker gets stung by a jellyfish. Sabrina is in panic mode and has no idea how to treat this type of injury. Her best guess is to pee on it, but she doesn’t have to go. So, much to Tuck’s dismay, Sabrina flags down a guy running on the beach and asks if he’ll pee on her husband. However, just before things get awkward (well, more awkward), another man comes up and informs them that it’s just a silly old wives’ tale. Turns out the two guys, Bruce and Kevin, are together and are kind enough to invite Tuck and Sabrina over for dinner. Even after Bruce almost peed on one of them.

“You almost let a man pee on me, Sabrina.”
“That’s how much I love you.”
– Sabrina James

The guys and girls groupchats start going crazy when a silly blog post writes about Grace and Logan eloping. For once, the post has accurate info and both group chats are making fun of them mercilessly. In the girls group chat, Sabrina learns that Hannah is pregnant and admits that she hasn’t told Garrett yet. Hannah makes all the girls promise to keep it on the down low until she tells him, which the girls agree to without question.

At their dinner later that night, Bruce and Kevin end up talking career things with Sabrina and Tucker. Bruce is a big fitness guy and has his own brand and social media, so Tucker and he are talking all things business. Meanwhile, Kevin is also a Harvard Law grad and is trading experiences with Sabrina. It’s really sweet that we get to see how grown Tuck and Sabrina are after all the work they put in when Jamie was born. They are too darn cute. Yet, every rose has its thorns. Sabrina overhears Tucker admitting to Bruce that he is feeling bored at work with the bar, and she is sad that he hadn’t mentioned it to her before. Tucker says he simply didn’t want to add more to her plate.

For some reason, their honeymoon is getting all the bad luck. Tuck and Sabrina are having a little make-out session against a palm tree, but Sabrina gets knocked out by a coconut that falls on her head. The next day, she is understandably, under the weather and finds herself staying in while Tucker takes a fishing trip with Bruce and Kevin. Somehow, things keep getting worse because both Tucker and Sabrina come home at the end of the night with horrible sunburns. And to make matters worse, Bruce and Kevin found and fished Alexander out of the ocean.

Frustrated by their lack of ‘doing anything’ on their honeymoon, Sabrina suggests that maybe they should just go home early. She argues that it’s been a poopfest so far and is worried that it’ll only get worse. They end up fighting. Tucker says this is the last chance they’ll have to do anything before she starts up her new job. They fight over their work situations because Sabrina is mad Tucker didn’t tell her he’s not satisfied at work, and Tuck is scared because he knows the job that Sabrina wants to accept will have her working over 80 hours a week. They end in an impasse because Tucker walks out to go get a drink at the bar with Bruce.

flowers in the store

Thankfully, Kevin is kind enough to stay, yap, and have some wine with Sabrina while she vents. Not even an hour later, they get a call that Tucker has been arrested, so they both sprint down to the station. Tucker got arrested over some silly misunderstanding, and since they are on an island where the primary language is not English, he didn’t have much say in the matter and had no choice but to go along with it. What a vacation. Luckily, Sabrina gets to work.

Turning back to Tucker, I give him a reassuring grin. “Baby, I didn’t spend three years at Harvard Law to let my husband rot in jail on my honeymoon. Watch your woman work.”

– Sabrina James

And work she does, getting Tucker out of there as quickly as he got in. In the aftermath of the ride home, they work through their fight and know they need to be better about communicating with each other. They agree to make the rest of the honeymoon about prioritizing themselves and their relationship, and to not worry about the future until they get back.

Their last day sadly rolls around, and as they are getting ready to leave, Bruce and Kevin strut over with job offers in hand. Bruce wants to expand his fitness brand into physical locations and has asked Tuck to be head of operations. And Kevin offers Sabrina the chance to join his law firm, where she can work the hard cases she loves while still having the hours to be with her family. With all this news in tow, Tucker and Sabrina head back to Jamie, planning to move to Manhattan for their new jobs and to be closer to Dean and Allie.

the legacy by elle kennedy

The Legacy

Hannah Wells is pregnant, and she hasn’t told Garrett. She keeps making excuses for herself because she is worried that telling him will add unnecessary emotional stress and mess with the end of the hockey season. Now, she is at a fancy red-carpet event with Garrett and Logan, celebrating their season and accomplishments, while trying not to run to the bathroom every 3 seconds.

In a frustrating turn of events, Garrett’s dad, Phil Graham, is also in attendance. Garrett is receiving the Goal of the Year award, while Phil is receiving a Lifetime Achievement award. Unsurprisingly, due to his history of abuse, Garrett is mad every time he has to be anywhere near his father. For the cameras, Garrett and Phil always act civil, trying not to start a scandal, but Garrett can never get away from him fast enough.

At the event, Garrett begins to fume in his father’s presence while Hannah and Logan are doing their best to get him out of there as calm as possible. But let’s face it. We all hate Phil Graham. Later, Hannah suggests to Garrett that maybe it’s time he set some professional boundaries and make it clear he doesn’t want to see his dad. Or just come clean about his horrible upbringing to the public. Garrett, however, is ultra sensitive to the subject and tells Hannah to leave it alone.

She doesn’t listen, though. Never does, this stubborn, beautiful woman of mine.
– Garrett Graham

After texting with the boys and poking fun at each other like the bestie brothers that they are, Garrett receives a call from his agent. Apparently, ESPN wants Garrett to do a segment for a show called The Legacy with his dad. Garrett instantly says no way, but it turns out Phil already accepted the offer on their behalf (stupid Phil). Garrett is tired of reliving all of the emotions and simply wants nothing to do with it.

Hannah is at work, where she is a music producer, when she gets a call from bestie Allie. Allie has been her main support system regarding the baby, since she is one of the only people who know. As much as she wants to tell Garrett, Hannah is trying to piece everything together and figure out how she feels. Since she and Garrett haven’t had a true talk about kids, she feels like she’s just trapping him, and she’s worried about how a baby could affect his career and how much support she’d have if he’s traveling all the time. Plus, with Garrett in his feels about his dad and making a comment that he’s worried he’d screw up his own kid, Hannah opts to wait.

Garrett calls his dad to tell him off, but Phil only shames him. He basically says Garrett should be thanking him for raising him to be a star. Garrett makes his way back to his hotel room after one of their hockey events and finds a girl who broke into his room. Logan teases him when he finds out, and when Garrett calls to tell Hannah, she is chill and laughs the whole thing off.

She’s the single thing in my life I don’t have to stress about. We’re just good, always, no matter what. When everything else is out of control, this woman grounds me.
– Garrett Graham

Hannah finds a giant check in the mail that’s her payment for helping in the music studio for a new hit song. She gets her hopes up that, maybe, with this money, she can help her parents finally escape the crappy town she grew up in (if you don’t recall Hannah’s backstory, I’d recommend reading my post on The Deal). Once again, she chickens out and doesn’t tell Garrett she’s pregnant because it’s the first good moment they’ve had in a while, and she doesn’t want to ruin it.

The next day, Garrett heads off to do his stupid interview thing with his stupid dad, who is getting worked up like no other. That’s when he sees the missed texts and calls from Hannah and hears in a voicemail that she’s pregnant, but that she’s bleeding and that something’s wrong. She needs to go to the hospital, and Garrett, hearing the panic in her voice (and not liking it one bit), dips out of there in a flash.

On the car ride to the hospital, Hannah and Garrett get into a fight. Hannah is trying to explain that she didn’t want to add more to his plate, and Garrett is upset because he feels like he is the last person to know. Of course, during this entire conversation, they are stuck in traffic, which takes road rage to a whole new level. In said argument, Garrett does the worst thing possible and compares Hannah to his dad, saying that he would also manipulate him with information. This pisses Hannah off to no end. She says he needs to tell the world the truth and stop trying to hide his past, that yes, it’s embarrassing and uncomfortable, but what’s the alternative?

off campus the deal elle kennedy cover photo

They make it to the hospital, and thankfully, nothing is wrong. It was just Hannah’s body adjusting to being pregnant and all the changes to her system. The fight continues because Garrett doesn’t know how to feel and is upset that he didn’t know, but Hannah is in complete emotional distress. Hannah heads out early to work the next day, taking some space from Garrett and the situation, and Garrett makes a call to bestie Logan. Garrett feels all alone because he needs advice and family support, which he doesn’t have. Hence, bestie brother Logan.

In true ‘Logan is an awesome guy’ fashion, Logan sticks up for Hannah and says that Garrett made the situation ten times worse and that he needs to make it up to her. And yeah, comparing Hannah to Phil Graham is how you make a situation ten times worse. Their phone call is really nice because Logan isn’t tearing into him in a self-deprecating way, making him feel sucky, but rather, Logan helps him admit his mistake and says Garrett needs to right the wrong, and that he’ll do whatever he can to help. After their phone call, Garrett sees that Hannah called a realtor, and he gets scared that she is going to leave him after his negative reaction, especially after she got the big royalty check.

So, he sprints off to find her. Garrett is working to do some dramatic monologue and fight to win Hannah back, but she has no idea why he is so panicked. When Hannah realizes why he’s so emotional about the situation, she quickly corrects him and says she has no intent to move out. She was calling the realtor to discuss her parents’ living situation.

My heart clenches tight when I realize he was still prepared to fight for us, even with the bombshell I dropped in his lap.
– Hannah Wells

They, naturally, continue to have this lovely conversation in front of Hannah’s coworkers. Garrett says he can’t imagine not raising this baby with her and that he is willing to do whatever it takes to make it work. He apologizes, and they clear the communication pathways, making up like the cute, sweet, sassy, stubborn parents they are. Hannah is a lot more relieved when she feels and hears that she is not going to be alone in this. Plus, all their friends rally around them.

“I was thinking,” Hannah says as she raises her mug to her lips. “We should get married.”
I’m in the middle of pouring some orange juice, and my hand freezes mid-pour. “Oh yeah?” I keep my tone casual.
She takes a demure sip, then flashes a little smile. “If you’re into it.”
– Elle Kennedy

That’s it. That’s the proposal. Hannah and Garrett decide to get married, and she’s like just get me a ring, and we’re all good. They are such a dude bro couple.

off campus series by elle kennedy

Garrett heads off to talk to the producer for The Legacy, do what he has to do, and create the space and boundaries he needs. He explains the situation to the producer, telling him about the abuse and that he can’t subject himself to a happy little segment about his perfect family when in reality his dad sucks. The producer asks if he wants to talk about it, and the segment becomes a discussion of his real past. The producer reveals that he went through a similar situation growing up, but he was too afraid to speak up about it. Garrett realizes he is in a position to make a different and encourage people to speak out against their abusers. And Garrett is so thankful to Hannah for helping him come this far.

Hannah and Garrett meet up with Tucker and Sabrina to go for a walk. Tuck and Sabrina gift them Alexander and a new creepy doll they found from the same set, Cassandra. They use sweet Jamie to deliver the news and gifts, and she is all smiles, thinking she is giving Auntie Hannah’s baby some nice dollies. Oh, how I love the Alexander plotline.

Our story ends on a fun note with Hannah revealing that Garrett did whip up a formal proposal. He got down on one knee and gave her a fancy engagement ring, which she wears when they go to her ultrasound together. The doctor gives them a big congratulations and confirms that they will be having twins, a baby boy, and a baby girl.

parting thoughts

And with that, we have made it to the end of the Off Campus R&R posts. If you’ve made it this far down in this post, THANK YOU. Like seriously you have no idea how much this means to me. While I am sad to say goodbye to this series, I know there is a lot more Elle Kennedy I need to catch up on. Plus, Off Campus is coming to Amazon Prime next Wednesday so yay. What R&R posts do we want to see in the future? Let me know!

Much love!
